SuperVisa Insurance

Travel Insurance

What is Super Visa Insurance?

The Super Visa program in Canada is a well-received initiative that permits parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to stay for a maximum of two years at a time, with the option of making multiple entries over a period of 10 years. It is a successful option for families who wish to remain in close proximity to their loved ones without having to relocate permanently to Canada.

Unlike the Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP), the Super Visa program does not have an annual limit on the number of applications that can be submitted, and the processing time for applications is comparatively swift. However, since approved Super Visa holders are not considered permanent residents of Canada (unlike approved PGP applicants), they require specific private medical coverage, commonly known as Super Visa insurance, to be eligible for entry.

All Super Visa applicants are legally obligated to have adequate travel insurance. To comply with this requirement, the applicant must demonstrate evidence of a valid emergency medical insurance plan for a minimum duration of one year, with a minimum coverage of $100,000. This condition is in place to protect visitors from the possibility of incurring significant healthcare expenses in Canada if they require medical care.

When applying for a Super Visa, it is necessary to obtain Super Visa insurance, which provides the minimum insurance coverage required by law to process your application. If you intend to visit family in Canada for less than six months, a Visitor Visa would be a more suitable option than a Super Visa. In such cases, Visitors to Canada insurance should be considered.
You cannot apply for a Super Visa application from within Canada. Also, not all applications are accepted. To increase your chances of getting approved, provide as much information as possible and make a strong case in your application. To learn more, contact an immigration consultant for help
To be eligible for a Super Visa, applicants must provide proof that they possess Canadian health insurance coverage that adheres to the Canadian government's regulations. Foreign visitors are not covered under provincial healthcare programs such as the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP), Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ), or any others, and therefore, obtaining health insurance is a legal requirement for Super Visa applicants.

While we certainly hope that you do not require significant medical treatment during your stay, even minor medical care can result in expenses amounting to thousands of dollars. The Canadian Institute for Health Information reports that the average cost of a hospital stay in Canada ranges from $6k to $8k.

In the absence of adequate insurance coverage, medical expenses can quickly accumulate. Super Visa insurance guarantees that the policyholder has enough financial protection to cover the cost of medical treatment while in Canada.
The impact on your insurance coverage will vary depending on the details of your pre-existing condition. When requesting a quote, you will be prompted to disclose any pre-existing conditions, which will enable the insurer to provide you with an accurate quote.

Certain insurers may charge higher premiums for particular conditions, or exclude them from coverage altogether. Once you have selected a quote, you can communicate with a representative from the chosen insurance company. They can offer guidance on any queries you may have regarding your pre-existing condition and can help customize the coverage to suit your comfort level.
Detailed information regarding the application process can be obtained by visiting the cic.gc.ca website or by consulting with an immigration consultant. The mandatory documents required for the Super Visa application include a written commitment from the applicant's child or grandchild in Canada who meets the minimum income requirement to provide financial support, proof of Canadian medical insurance coverage for the duration of the applicant's stay in Canada, and completion of an Immigration Medical Examination (IME).
As soon as the visitor arrives in Canada, the Super Visa insurance takes effect. If there are any alterations to the initial plans, it is typically possible to modify the start date of the coverage by contacting the insurance provider before it commences.
